The Dorgan House

Big Bend National Park, Texas The Dorgan House is located in Big Bend National Park, Texas. It was a working ranch house along the Rio Grande in the early part of the 20th century. It was abandoned when the Park Service took the area over in 1944. The chimney is entirely made of petrified wood found in the area. One of the most amazing places I've ever been. I can't even begin to describe the stars to you. One 30 second exposure at high ISO combined in camera with a light painted exposure for the house. www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxGX2PI56jo

The Way it Was

Big Bend National Park in Texas is a Gold Tier Dark Sky Park. The skies are breath-taking, literally. You could easily see The Great Orion Nebula with your naked eye, you can spot it in this photo within the sword sheath.

The Milky Way glows over Deal Beach, NJ Massive power outages caused by hurricane Irene created excellent dark sky conditions. This is a rare sight on a Monmouth County beach!

The Last Sand

This clump of sand was about 4 feet in height. It's sitting on a breaker on Sea Bright beach. This is all that's left of the sand dunes it belonged too. The waves took every bit except the portion that sat on the breaker! Hurricane Irene Sea Bright, NJ

The Milky Lodge

I spent the weekend at a cabin in the Catskill mountains of New York state for a friend's bachelor party. We kayaked, fished, photographed, cooked and had a great time. Here's the Milky Way over our cabin Saturday night, near the Pepacton reservoir.

An Ocean of Stars East Point Light, Heislerville, NJ "East Point Lighthouse is the second oldest lighthouse in New Jersey. Built in 1849, the lighthouse is located on the east bank of the mouth of the Maurice River. Its purpose is to guide fishermen, oystermen and other mariners into the river from the Delaware Bay. The lighthouse was extinguished at the beginning of WWII in 1941. The light was not re-lit after the war and was abandoned until 1971 when the Maurice River Historical Society was formed to protect and restore it. In 1980 the Coast Guard reinstalled a beacon and put the East Point Lighthouse back on the list of active navigational aids. Major exterior renovation took place in 1998.This work included restoring the lantern room, repainting the bricks, replacing the porch, the windows and the shutters with accurate replicas." -Maurice River Historical Society
